Course Description:
Students will focus on a rigorous presentation of concepts and skills that will prepare them for the next appropriate mathematics course in grade 9. As stated in the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics, students will focus on three critical areas:
(1) Formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations.
(2) Grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships.
(3) Analyzing two-dimensional and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
Essential Materials:
· iPad and charger
· A notebook for math notes (toolkit)
· A scientific calculator – very important since supplies cannot be shared right now!
· An ample supply of pencils and erasers
Suggested Materials
· Stylus to help with work on the iPad
· A binder or folder dedicated to mathematics (to help organize assignments)
Grading Policy:
A student’s grade reflects their mathematical understanding. Grades are weighted as follows:
Homework - 15%
Classwork/Exit Ticket/Participation -30%
Attendance - 5%
Assessments (quizzes, tests, projects) - 50%
According to the high school grading policy, no extra credit is given. Students should keep all work to resolve grading discrepancies.
Homework:
Homework is given to enhance the effectiveness of class instruction. It provides an opportunity for students to practice and review math skills and concepts. Homework is evaluated using the following criteria:
· Has the assignment been turned in on time?
· Has the student attempted to complete the assignment?
· Has the student shown their work?
· Does the work reflect the ability of the student?
Homework is due at the beginning of class. If a student has an excused absence, they are responsible for collecting missed homework and may complete it by the next class without penalty.
*Graded on EFFORT and COMPLETION – as long as you try your best and complete the assignment, you will receive 100%
Classwork/Participation:
Students are expected to actively participate and work during the entire math class. Activities and assignments given during class are part of student’s grades.
Tests/Quizzes:
Test and quizzes should be completed the day they are given. If a student is absent for a test or quiz, a 0% score will be entered into the gradebook until the student can make-up the test/quiz.
Corrections & Retake Policy:
Any student that does not like their grade on a Quiz/Test can stay after school to make corrections with their teacher. These corrections can improve their grade on the assignment to a 60%.
For students that have at least a 70% homework average, they may stay after school to retake a Quiz/Test if they wish. Students are allowed two retakes per semester. The new grade will replace the old grade.
Math Notebook/Toolkit:
Students will create a math notebook/toolkit which consists of formulas, definitions, examples, and notes.
Technology Policy:
Students’ iPads are to be fully charged and they are to use them for educational purposes during math class and not for personal activities or entertainment. According to school policy, students may not use cell phones during class.
After School Extra Help:
Extra help in math is available Tuesdays from 2:15 to 2:55. Students should plan to attend if they have been absent, need extra help, have missing assignments, or need to take/retake an assessment.
